Hawaii County Bans GMO Coffee and Taro
Though the issue has become overshadowed in recent months by food recalls and the move toward local produce, there are still a sizable number of people who care about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in crops.

Speaking in the newspaper West Hawaii Today, Kona coffee farmer and bill proponent Chuck Moss gave an example of potential risks of GMO experimentation. Creating coffee trees without caffeine could spread to other trees, in such as instance it would be hard to market Kona coffee, he said. “How can you tell the difference from a regular tree, from a decaf tree, or a regular bean from a decaf bean?” Moss asked.
The newspaper also reported that 82 percent of the 89 coffee farmers on the island of Hawai were in favor of the GMO ban.
